ABOUT THE PAYBACK

ThePayback-2015What is The Payback?

The Payback was started by Eddie Roberts, guitarist and bandleader of UK Funk group The New Mastersounds. After living in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco for several years, Eddie developed a real sense of connection to the community and felt the day-to-day reality of the burgeoning homeless situation in his neighborhood. There is currently a mass displacement of families occurring within the Bay Area; families with young children are often hit hardest with these changes.

Eddie decided to address this issue directly through partnering with various artists, musicians and other nonprofits to raise funds for organizations that are working to make a real difference in the lives of homeless families. The Payback benefit concerts have raised tens of thousands of dollars over the past two years in both San Francisco and Denver, CO. The Payback also has plans to expand to other major cities in the US over the next several years.

Who Will Benefit?

The San Francisco Payback will support Compass Family Services, an organization whose mission is to help homeless families and families at imminent risk for homelessness to achieve housing stability, family well-being, and self-sufficiency. Each year, Compass Family Services supports approximately 5,000 children and parents, 90 percent of whom are below the federal poverty line, and 50 percent of whom are under 18 years of age. The majority of their clients are single mothers with one or two children.

San Francisco Facts on Homelessness:

  • Family homelessness has increased 20% in the past four years.
  • Average wait for a family to get into temporary shelter is over eight months.
  • A single parent with two children must work three full-time, minimum wage jobs to afford basic living expenses.
  • 3,800 low-income children are on the waiting list for subsidized childcare.

Compass Family Services Accomplishments:

  • 95% of families in Compass housing programs don’t return to shelters within a year of exiting the program.
  • 5,000 parents and children benefit from their education, employment, and housing services every year.
  • More than 1,000 children have graduated from their early childhood education programs prepared for success in kindergarten and beyond.
  • They provide 32,500 nights of shelter for families annually.
  • Through over 30,000 case

Eddie Roberts
New Mastersounds
Eddie Roberts is the band leader, guitarist and producer of UK funk group The New Mastersounds. He originally put the band together in 1999 to play The Cooker nightclub in Leeds, UK. Fast-forward 16 years and his recorded catalogue boasts 30 or more singles, 14 studio albums, 4 live albums, 1 remix album and various compilation albums.     As an example of the respect The New Masterounds command, Peter Wermelinger - DJ, collector, and author of the crate-diggers’ bible The Funky & Groovy Music Lexicon - places the 2001 NMS track ‘Turn This Thing Around’ in his all-time top- ten tunes, along with the likes of Eddie Harris, Funkadelic, and Herbie Hancock. The New Mastersounds are at the very top of an elite selection of acts that bring the true soul out of funk.
Zigaboo Modeliste
The Meters
Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste is a master drummer, rhythm innovator, percussionist, and New Orleans legend. The most highly-acclaimed drummer ever to hail from the Crescent City, Ziggy’s creativity has been a wellspring of funk influence for three decades, inspiring many Hip-Hop tracks. His innovative work as a member of the internationally acclaimed R&B group, The Meters, as well as his side work with artists like Keith Richards, Robert Palmer and Dr. John, have garnered him an unparalleled level of respect among musicians and fans. Ziggy’s style is unique. He is a master of creating funk grooves and new concepts for funk drumming. Zigaboo’s music consistently demonstrates his brilliance as the premier funk drummer of the contemporary era.
Robert Walter
Greyboy Allstars
Robert Walter is an accomplished keyboardist and composer. Walter plays Piano, Hammond B3, and Fender Rhodes. While touring extensively in the US and Europe, Walter has worked as a leader and sideman with many of the giants of American jazz and funk music. Reed Mathis
Tea Leaf Green
Reed Mathis is the bass player for Northern California Jam Band Tea Leaf Green. Mathis' unique style and tone has been described as "talking bass." In a feature article in Bass Player in September, 2002, noted music author Bill Milkowski writes: "No other electric bass player around today has been as successful (as Mathis) at incorporating mind-blowing and mondo-effects into a personal voice on the instrument. The charismatic Mathis is freed up to soar into the high register and wail with impunity on his heavy effected bass guitar because Haas is holding down the basslines on the Rhodes."
Mike Dillon
Primus
How many artists can claim being praised a "punk rock provocateur," "jazz vibraphone visionary" and "percussion virtuoso" in the same sentence? There's only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Brave Combo and Ani DiFranco, collaborations such as Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin or bands he's fronted, including Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for 25 years now.

Adryon de León
Orgone
Adryon de León, born and raised in the tiny artist’s village of Ojai, CA cut her teeth in a Baptist congregation. Over her formative years, musical theater infused de León’s life with the end result a unique theatrical, gritty, and soulful sound. Currently, she is a featured principal vocalist/performer for the Disneyland Resort, has performed background vocals for Macy Gray, Patti Austin and George Clinton, and lends her voice to commercial sessions. In 2013, she joined the acclaimed Los Angeles-based soul & funk group Orgone.
